BLAZE YA DEAD HOMIE & BUKSHOT: Blockwork Morgue

Year: 2024
Label: Mobstyle Music/Majik Ninja Entertainment

It’s been a long wait since 2021’s Cadaver. But now we finally have some new Blaze Ya Dead Homie. Right?

Well, not quite. This is a collaborative mini-album by the dead gangsta and horrorcore veteran Bukshot. And it’s only 27 minutes long, including two versions of the track J.A.F.U.D. (aka Just Another Fucked Up Day).

So for those of us who wait for a new Blaze album, the wait’s still not over.

But on the other hand, in comparison to 2021’s Oh! The Horror Meets Blaze mini-album, where the Dead G teamed up with Oh! The Horror, this is more in style with what Blaze usually does. No nu metal here. So it will quench the worst thirst.

To be perfectly candid, in comparison to aforementioned Cadaver, which turned out to be a strong album, Blockwork Morgue isn’t exactly gobsmacking. It’s not bad either. It’s entirely serviceable, but it lacks the wow! factor tracks like Back Window or Let It Out had. Even after about ten playthroughs, none of the tracks have left much of a lasting impression on me.

And yeah, I realize this mini-album is 50% about Bukshot, and I make it sound like a Blaze release. The fact is, I myself am quite strongly partial towards Blaze, and as such am far more familiar with his output than Bukshot’s, which explains this.

Compared to Blaze’s own material, the production and style is a lot darker and more somber. The production and beats – courtesy of Michael “Seven” Summers – are much more obviously horrorcore instead of Blaze’s typical style of gangsta meets horrorcore. I’ll chalk this down to the Bukshot factor.

And, for sure, Blaze’s and Bukshot’s styles work well together. Blaze’s voice is a bit brighter, whereas Bukshot’s has a darker, more menacing timbre.

Ultimately, despite not containing any “hits”, Blockwork Morgue is a bit-sized snack worthwhile for fans of either (or both) participating rapper. It’ll stay the worst hunger for a while, and is worth a spin every now and then. It’s also nice to hear the duo pair up with frequent Blaze collaborators ABK and Turncoat Dirty (aka Boondox) on Take An L – although it’s only a remix of a track released originally released as a Bukshot track. The twiztid pair Jamie Madrox and Monoxide also make welcome appearances on separate tracks.

Now, how long do we have to wait for a new Blaze album?
