AVULSED: Extraterrestrial Carnage
Release year: 2023
Label: Xtreem Music
It’s been a while since long-running Spanish death metal act Avulsed released anything – six years in fact. As such, this fresh new release will probably not sate the thirst of old fans.
That’s purely because of it’s length: a mere two tracks, with a running time of 10 minutes. If you’ve been waiting for six years, this is barely an appetizer.
But it’s a fierce twosome on offer here. Combining a foundation of brutal death metal with hints of both groove and the sinister, melancholic guitar melodies of doom-laden Finnish death metal, Avulsed cover a broad spectrum of death metal on these two tracks.
Vocalist Dave Rotten growls and shrieks with convincing fierceness. The guitars are heavy like tungsten, but without forgetting rhythmic, grooving elements and haunting melodies. The drums (courtesy of fresh face GoG) vary from a rocking groove to tightly thrashing plods to rapid-fire pounding. As can be expected from a band who’ve been trading in death metal since 1991, it’s all played tightly. And when complemented by a tight sound, it’s a nice little package.
Two tracks of this is far too little. But if they’re anything to go by, Avulsed anno 2023 are in fine form. Their combination of brutality, groove and melody will have an appeal to a broad base of death metal fans.
So, how long will we have to wait for a new full-length?
